- * SODEDIT Version 1.1 Notes: (Bryan Baker - 11/93) *
- ****************************************************
-
- SODEDIT was derived from the Spear of Destiny and Wolfenstein 3-D map
- editor, MAPEDIT version 7.1. Support for Wolfenstein 3-D has been removed
- due to disapproval by Apogee Software. SODEDIT only works with Spear of
- Destiny game files. Note that Spear of Destiny is owned and copyrighted
- by Id Software and distributed by FormGen Corporation. SODEDIT is not a
- product of nor is supported by either of these companies. (Wolfenstein 3-D
- is owned and copyrighted by Id Software and distributed by Apogee Software.)
-
- Please report any bugs and feel free to make suggestions for improvement to:
- Bryan Baker @ CompuServe ID 71121,3376
-
-
- NEW FEATURES and ENHANCEMENTS:
-
- The two major additions that have been made are very powerful and make
- the map construction process much faster and easier! See SODEDIT.DOC for
- more information.
-
- - Added "Rubberband" drawing subroutine written by Wayne Skala
- (Thanks, Wayne!)
-
- - Enhanced ability to display only certain map datatypes (objects, walls,
- and specific floor codes)
-
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The following sections summarize the evolution of MAPEDIT version 7.1.
-
-
- *******************************************
- * VERSION 7.1 NOTES: (Bryan Baker - 8/93) *
- *******************************************
-
- MAPEDIT will no longer output ".WL1" gamemaps that can be used with the
- shareware version of Wolf-3D. However the floors in these maps may be
- displayed and edited, and they can be exported as individual floors.
-
- The Shareware Concept was created in order to provide users with the
- opportunity to try commercial products at a very minimal cost (usually free)
- prior to purchasing the software. If you continue to use a shareware product
- beyond a "reasonable timeframe", you are obligated to register it with the
- publisher. In the case of Wolfenstein 3-D, there are 10 levels available as
- shareware. Additional levels may be obtained by registering the program with
- Apogee Software (1-800-426-3123).
-
- It has been recognized that the availability of "freeware" levels that work
- with the shareware version of the program potentially reduces the incentive
- for registration. Note that whether you play the original levels over and
- over, or whether you obtain an add-on set, you are still obligated to register
- if you choose to continue using the product.
-
-
-
- NEW FEATURES and ENHANCEMENTS:
-
- - "ZAP" feature added to instantly set all floorcodes within a given room to
- the current floorcode assigned to the left mouse button. ('Z' command)
-
- - Full-screen help available (F1 key)
-
- - Added ability to change level names (N command)
-
- - Added ability to selectively display the following types of objects:
- '#' - Level 1 & 3 Guards
- '$' - Level 1, 3, & 4 Guards
- '%' - All Guards
-
- - Added ability to display either left or right mouse button setting
- (left/right arrow keys)
-
- - Eliminated Error 203 (caused by running out of memory) by implementing use
- of disk as a swap area. This results in somewhat slower operation, but at
- least the error has been eliminated. For best results, use a RAM disk.
- (See the MAPED71.DOC file for more information.)
-
- - Included EDITTIPS.DOC hints and tips file written by Warren Buss.
- (This is an excellent document, and should be read and re-read by every user
- of MAPEDIT!)
-
- - The ALT_DEF.ZIP set of map definition files are now included as the standard
- set.
-
-
-
-
- *********************************************************
- * VERSION 7.0 NOTES: (Bryan Baker, Dave Huntoon - 6/93) *
- *********************************************************
-
- - Read/Write filenames may now be specified.
-
- - Added ability to selectively display the following types of objects:
- '1' - Only Level 1 guards
- '2' - Only Treasure and One-ups
- '3' - Only Level 3 guards
- '4' - Only Level 4 guards
- '5' - Only Super guards
- '6' - Only Food, First-aid, Ammo, Guns, and One-ups
- 'A' - Revert to all object display
-
- - Fixed file opening logic and error reporting to minimize problems getting
- MapEdit working in all versions of Wolfenstein. Won't report errors when
- backup copies of game maps are found in the same directory.
-
- - Will work with mapdata and objdata files using DEF, WL1, WL6 and SOD
- extensions. Will try to open *.DEF files 1'st. If you want MapEdit to use
- the WL1, WL6 or SOD files remove or rename the *.DEF files.
-
- - An alternate set of map and object definition files have been included
- (see ALT_DEF.ZIP). Try them, you may like them! They are also sorted
- by type and by most used.
-
- - Modified LEGEND display to only show those map or object elements that are
- specified in the mapdata and objdata files. Also, the legend order is the
- same as the file order. Now you can sort the items as you please.
- (i.e. You can place your most used items near the top, and the least used
- at the bottom to reduce the necessary scrolling.)
-
- - Updated mapdata and objdata files. Added the character additions for
- comments from Joe "the Maverick" Scoleri's DEF file.

- * VERSION 6.0 NOTES: (Dave Huntoon - 5/93) *
- ********************************************
-
- - This release of MapEdit will display Help in the edit window (below the map
- legend). You will be able to display Help or Bryan Baker's statistics
- display. For slow machines this allows you to turn off the statistics
- calculations. You can then step fast through the levels and edit maps
- without a delay while the statistics are being calculated. You can switch
- back to the statistics display when you want that information.
-
- - You can copy, paste and exchange floor maps within an edit session.
- You can move a floor if you decide you want it on a different level.
-
- - You can write out and read in floors from different games. You now can move
- your favorite creation in *.wl1 to *.wl6 and *.SOD. See MAPEDIT.DOC for how
- this is implemented. You can now share your creations with your friends.
- You can take floors created by a number of people and merge them into one
- game. There can be a contest and all of the best creations are put together
- to create a best-of game.
-
- - When using the clear command you can select the floor value to fill with.
- You can now fill with a selected wall value or floor value.
-
- - I've included separate .def files for the different versions of Wolfenstein
- (.wl1, .wl6, .SOD)
-
- *******************************************
- * VERSION 5.0 NOTES: (Bryan Baker - 4/93) *
- *******************************************
-
- - This release of MapEdit will display in the edit window (below the map
- legend), the following level statistics:
-
- Number of Static Objects
- Total number of Guards
- Total number of Doors
-
- Number of Level 1 Guards
- Number of Level 3 Guards
- Number of Level 4 Guards
- Number of Boss Guards
-
- Number of Secret Doors
- Number of Treasure and Extra Lives
-
- This information can be very useful in designing levels. There are some
- program limits that must not be exceeded. These limits are:
-
- 400 Static Objects
- 150 Guards
- 64 Doors (Unlocked + Locked + Elevator Doors)
-
- When these limits are exceeded, the text changes to red as a visual
- warning.
-
- Note that there are different Boss Guards in Spear of Destiny than in
- Wolfenstein 3-D. Since the OBJDATA.DEF contains descriptions for both
- sets, they are all counted and shown in the statistics. You must be aware
- of the different Boss Guards that will be available in the game for which
- you are designing levels.
-
- *********************************************
- * VERSION 4.1a NOTES: (Dave Huntoon - 3/93) *
- *********************************************
-
- - This release of MapEdit should work with all versions of the game, including
- the three, six and Spear of Destiny (SOD) episode editions.
-
- - The map files may become a lot larger after using MapEdit, even if you do
- not alter any levels. This is because MapEdit does not recompress the maps
- with the newer compression scheme used in v1.1 of the game. This doesn't
- cause a problem when playing the game, it just makes the map files larger.
-
- - The MAPDATA.DEF file contains information about the new wall images used in
- the 6-episode and SOD games. If you are editing the 1-episode game, be
- careful not to select any of the newer wall images. The same goes true in
- the 3 and 6-episode games, don't select SOD objects or walls. You may want
- to create separate .DEF files, one set for each version of the game. The
- walls and objects used in SOD are indicated in the .DEF files and will show
- up in mapedit.
-
- - The OBJDATA.DEF file has been updated with all objects and walls. You may
- want to change the descriptions found there.
-
- - In SOD the objects past 00FE are accessible.
-
- - A minor fix was added to completely clear the text area below the map
- display when the mouse pointer is moved off of the map area.
-
